The Slytherin - Gryffindor Connection
It doesn't take the best photos and the flash would have flooded out the pic, so pardon the darkness;
From Ginger Gargoyle's Gems |
The yarn is soooo soft! It is called "Death Eaters" by Faery Fibers ... I've never heard of them, but man are these socks comfy! They are 100% merino superwash ... its like putting my feet into clouds - and I am not a big sock person so trust me when i say you would love this yarn.
She also made me a pushmepullyou style sock bookmark - have you seen these? It is so cute! one half is green the other grey. She even had time to felt me up a little bag that looks like a cauldron -- it is adorable (I may have to hide it from my 9yr old though, she thinks its a hat for her doll).
Thank you Queenie! You were a wonderful partner.

From Slytherin to Gryffindor
Here are the socks. The are knit up using yarn from TipoFilato and are in the Ginerva colorway. The colorway was named for Ginny Weasley. The pattern is the "Yarn Over Cable" and can be found in Sensational Knitted Socks in the 5 stitch section.
Anyway, that should help anyone wanting to know more about what I made for my pal. Felula, I am really happy that the socks fit you. Enjoy the package!!!

Thanks Penelope of Flitwick!
Owl Arrival!
I've got pictures taken, but must wait until the husband returns to upload them (I am not really very good with muggle devices that require technical knowledge - in other words, if I can't push stop or go, I'm lost!!)
But I got a WONDERFUL pair of socks in the fire colors - Gryffindor red & gold (yellow) with orange. I LOVE the fire colors, always have (I'm a Fall baby, born in New England ... how could I *not* love them???) Not sure what the pattern is, but I really like it! From the stitch size, my partner used size 0 needles, tho! And there is the most amazing bookmark in this same yarn - a crocheted fan pattern. I think I'm going to have to raid my partner's pattern stash!!
Speaking of patterns, I got FOUR of them! Not the one she used for the socks, tho. Yeah, I really like the pattern. It's a very fancy rib stitch. Since I really need socks that hug my feet, these are wonderful.
Also got TWO sets of size 0 metal dpns - now I all I have to do is find the yarn for the pattern I have that requires size 0 needles - the Bayerische.
There's a really nice project bag in warm autumn colors, a pair of knitted washcloths - one in a brick stitch, the other in a wonderful star pattern. Neither of which will get used as washcloths - they are both going on our big kitchen table. The brick stitch one will be used under serving dishes. The star one is on the lazy susan that's in the middle of the table for salt & pepper & grinder spices. It just fits. ;)
There are 2 sets of stitch markers - a heavier set in deep red & bronze and a lighter set (which I will use much more often!) in light red & a fire-polished gold. Neither set shows up well in the picture I took, but they are both very pretty. Also included were point protectors for both straight & circular needles. The straight needle set is so cute - tiny socks! You put the points in the legs of the socks!! Some bath soak crystals (stress relief & muscle relief - how *did* she know???), a small composition book, just the right size to keep in the project bag to make notes, some cherry tic-tacs (I'm telling you, my partner is psychic! Must be a Slytherin trait - mind-reading & snakes, huh? LOL)
And guarding the box? The most adorable little red fuzzy owl with yellow feet! I think I'll have to beg for the pattern. I'm sort of starting to collect owls, I think - I keep finding them tumbling around, anyhow!

Most of them are variations on the same herbs. I'm thinking making

might be a great idea, not to mention a "smelly" treat when opening up
the containers!
This was from another list I am on. I'm already thinking that a few of
the bottles I've been saving from the recycle bin would look great with
these in them and a shear fabric tied over the top.
Or maybe sew the bags in house colors, or the shape of owls. So many
possibilities. Grandma

Re: Pink Ribbons
Real men care enough to take care of their families ... *AND* themselves.
My mother died because of cancer. NOTHING in my life ever scared me more than having the doctor's office call me to come back in because of a shadow on a mammogram. Turned out to be a cyst, thank the Lady. But my family & I spent a very scary few weeks until we knew, for sure, what it was.

Tie a pink ribbon round the old oak tree
Pink has another meaning for me. My family is plauged with cancer. My mother had multiple operations that prevented her from erupting with full blown breast cancer.
As a retired muggle nurse i have seen way too many women die from this disease.
Detection is simple. Do your self exams. Hang the reminder card in the shower. When it is time go and get your mammograms. I know they are quite literally a pain, but a bigger pain would be to lose you.
Wizards! Yes you men! One of the greatest gifts you can give the woman you love is the reminder to be an active participant in preventing that disease.
Real men wear pink.

I had a *lot* of fun with this swap. Couldn't believe how much I could come up with that reflected Slytherin, including the little green sneaky snake. Gods, I can remember my kids playing with those things, and I'm now a grandmother of 7, with the 8th one due at the end of this month!!
You'll find the witches hat washcloth will help to keep your hands clean while you are knitting, the hair elastic will help to prevent your hair from getting in your way, and the two scrubbies will help to keep that coffee cup clean.
That map of England is just over the top, isn't it? I got the original as a gift, and have only used it to make copies, so I can keep using it over and over again. I just love it! It is so perfect for HP crafting. :)

Queen Frysia of Gryffindor - DON'T READ THIS
I have a question for more advanced knitters. For the first time on a sock I am doing a pattern that calls for my carrying the yarn on the inside of the sock from spot to spot along the row. I thought I was leaving enough ease for it to stretch, but it doesn't seem to want to stretch far enough to make it comfortably over the instep.
How loose should it be? I'm afraid if I make it too loose there will be holes ... but too tight it won't fit nice ... what would you recommend?

I've had so much fun finding or making things that related to Slytherin. It's really amazing just what is out there. And, of course, how things be re-purposed to fit a universe that they didn't come from.
I am so looking forward to your reaction when you get your package. I'm just not sure which item I'm most looking forward to your reaction to! LOL

i took all of your good advise and came up with this plan to keep track of my swaps and gifts to be made and stuff like that. i made a folder and put tabs in it each swap or gift has a tab. inside each tab area are sheets that say stuff like "rules" and "spoilee" where i can put all the things i know about the swap and my swap partner. i also put in sheets for ideas (because usually i doodle out my ideas and make lists of all the possible things i COULD make till i decide on the best ones) and a sheet for patterns (where i can keep any pertinint patterns.) each tab also has a check list with a hopefull date to finish each item. in the front i printed some calendars so that i can see what hard deadlines are comming up for mailing etc. i also set up my phone to do reminders a day before the actuall mailing date. yay! i really do feel much better now and have no fear that anything will get forgotten even durring my big move to california. :0) how about a pic of my supper spiffy folder? ok.

Perfect Sock Yarn
All for now as I need to e-mail my pal and post on my blog.
Questions Answered :)
I had some very valid questions asked this morning so I wanted to post here to make sure that everyone knows what is going on.
I'm not sure I understand how to play the quizzes that are put up on the blog. And I cannot find any rules anywhere on it, either.
Do we answer all we can?
Answer as many of the trivia as you want or don't answer at all it is up to you.
On the blog?
When answering trivia on the blog answer it in the comments and the person who posted the trivia will get back to you and let you know if you were right.
to our prefects? (in which case, how do we contact them? I can't find that info, either)
Prefects you should have been contacting your house, they should have your email to get in touch with you in case they need something. Check your email to see if there is an email from your prefect and save their email. If you have not heard from your prefects let me know.
House quizzes go on your personal blog or can be emailed to your prefect.
I've never seen a posting on the Gryffindor quiz that I answered on the blog - How do we know? Your prefects should let you know who wins the quizzes. Do we get House points for answering? Yes you get house points for answering the quizzes and trivia,You get 5 points per answer if you are right for the trivia and 10 for every quiz answered.
I hope this helps!! I hope to have the house points up soon!

Sneak Peak
Greetings from the Snake Pit!!! I am making good progress on my pal's socks and have finally picked out some lovely needles for her that are on their way here. Here is a sneak peak of the socks. Of course it is just the heel part. Not that I am gonna show the pattern part. But ya can at least have an idea of the colors. Other than that, not much going on here. Just picking out some items for the package. ::back off to the Snake Pit::
Oooooo...Lookey, lookey...
I got a package from my Prefect, Megeara, today with the prize from the first Slytherin House Quiz. Look at the yummies that were inside...
The yarn is from Sunshine Yarns in the colorway Chinese Fireball Dragon, and the groovy owl stitch markers are from Crazy4Dyeing.
Thanks so much Megeara!!!

Re: Greed
This may not (please note I said 'may not') be all JKR, either. I know nothing, really, about publishing, but I do know a little bit about other businesses and her publisher and/or lawyers may also be behind this. I don't know how much personal choice she may/may not have in such issues.
But it sure is discouraging. Will she/they be after things like sock patterns and knitters next?

Has anybody seen an owl?
In fact he did not put it in quotes at all.I read the trial transcripts. (Yup I do have time on my hands).
It seems to me he was used badly by the shady publishing house who contacted him. he did not know how to legally anecdote a book and the sleazeball publisher did not have a competent editor assigned to him.
Now the poor guy hasn't got a chance to publish anything because his name is mud in the book world.
If he had a good publishing house, a mentor and a good editor we would have had another reference book.
I'm not a lawyer but have been, unfortunately, a witness in a publishing case. Had to write a complete textbook and prepare all new study material in a two month period one year because of a unknowing person thinking that you did not have to use anecdotes.
Everyone wants to spend your 25th wedding anniversary long distance on the phone with your editor right! Grandma

Judge waves gavel, says Avada Kedavra to Harry Potter Lexicon: "Steven Vander Ark's Harry Potter lexicon has vanished and may never be seen again. The handy guide was not spirited away with the wave of a wand: it was, instead, banned with the bang of a gavel. In a ruling issued this morning, Judge Robert Patterson affirmed that Ark and his publisher had failed to demonstrate that the reference text fell within the scope of fair use."Now with the way this article reads, it will affectively not only stop the publication but also knock out the website that so many of us have come to love ... this will likely cause a cascade effect to the other 'back up' sites as well and they all become leary of falling to the same legal challenge.
Just a heads up.
